Opening Frazier Wines
As you all know, being loyal wine club members, Frazier produces BIG, BOLD Cabernets and Merlots.  As such, we always recommend dencanting our young wines for a mininum of 2-3 hours prior to your enjoyment.  Additionally, we recommend that you cellar these wines for at least 6 months prior to opening.  The results will be well worth the wait!

2007 Harvest Report

Greetings friends of Frazier! It has been around four months since we last sent out a newsletter and in that time a lot has taken place.

One topic of discussion that is brought up by many who visit the winery is that of the beautiful weather in Napa. We all know Napa has one of the best climates in the world, especially as grapes are concerned. We seem to strike a perfect balance of sun, rain, temperature, and soil types year in and year out and 2007 was no different. Although our harvest just began (October 11th) with Merlot in the Coombsville area of Napa, our friends up north in the Valley are already done with their Cabernet, which we won't begin to harvest for another few weeks.

Although the 2007 harvest looks to be very promising, it did not start out looking as such. California recorded the lowest snow pack levels since 1988 and rainfall in the Valley was down significantly from an average of 25-30 inches to right around 18 inches for 2007. With this reduced rainfall came several unanticipated benefits to the vines. First, the lower amount of rain worked to create smaller berries with higher levels of concentration, a phenomenon which makes any red winemaker smile from ear to ear. A second benefit was the vines had reduced canopies due to the lack of rainfall, which in turn necessitated a need for less water. All of these unanticipated benefits were capped off by mostly cool weather which seemed to fight the need for addiditonal irrigation.

At this stage in the season, with just a few weeks left before Cabernet harvest, the vines look to have produced even clusters of small highly concentrated fruit which should in turn lend itself very well to the production of another exquisite vintage of Frazier Cabernet and Merlot. All in all a nice growing season.

Phantom of the Cave

Summer festivities at Frazier are always a great time! This summer we hosted a unique one night only event with a great friend and bona fide Broadway star, Brad Little. Brad, who has starred in the Phanton of the Opera for over 10 years performed a private show in the Frazier caves in late July. Brad first met Bill Frazier where else but on a visit to Frazier Winery!  Before long Brad was  marvelling at the acoustics in the center portion of the cave and thinking of how he could leave his imprint on this Valley so well regarded for wine.

Fast forward a few years and Bill & Brad connect one week before Brad's latest run as the Phantom was about to end in Sacramento. After working out an arrangement with a pianist who accompanied Brad, and rehearsing for one day, Brad was primed and ready for the performance. The amazing combination of natural acoustics directing Brad's incredibly powerful voice to every inch of the cave was truly magnificent.  This was a great event! Although Brad lives in New York City he will be back in California in the Spring time. We hope to again partner up with Brad for another truly unforgettable performance.

Island Fever in the Valley

Our annual Wine Club Party was held September 22nd inside the Frazier cave.  The evening was a fun mix of colorful decor, steel drum rhythms, and enough barbeque vittles to feed "the Italian Army" as one member put it.

Call us crazy but we initially intended for this fiesta to be held outside on the patio, it was after all September. We ended up holding the party inside the cave due to tiny but persistent amounts of mist, and we think it worked out better.

The cave was transformed in to an island oasis, complete with an assortment of vintage Frazier and Memento wines dating back to the first vintage of Memento in 2000 paired with a feast of international barbeque specialties. The barbeque ranged from jerk chicken and shrimp of the Carribean to shredded beef with the most unbelievably delicious chimichurri sauce, indicative of the Falkland Islands off Argentina, to the showpiece of the night, a whole slow roasted hog done South Carolina style with a fantastic mustard vinegar sauce. We actually had so much food leftover that we briefly (very briefly) considered sending doggy bags to all of the members who couldn't make the trek to Napa, but we figured that jerk shrimp don't travel well! Fortunately some folks had enough room left to get up and boogie to the steel drum sounds of The Harmonics.

The party was a blast,  and by the comments we received we might make this an annual theme. We know we live far from many of you but we sure hope that you are able to make the Wine Club Party next year.

Summer Fun

The Jimmy Valvano Foundation Dinner for Cancer Research at Frazier Winery

This was an exciting summer for us at the winery. Not only did we have the opportunity to meet new friends through our tours and tatings but we also met many new people through several great events we held.

The events were kicked off by the Brad Little performance and quickly followed by the Wine Country Film Fest, which we again hosted for the second consecutive year. Although the logistics of setting up and breaking down a 40 foot canvas screen and surround sound audio equipment can prove to be a challenge, the event was a wonderful way to celebrate the summer. Opening night was not to be missed. The premier of the movie "No Reservations" along with the spotting of a few celebrity chefs, not to mention a cooking demonstration by Chef Ken Frank of La Toque in Rutherford, was yet another reminder to us all of how lucky we are to be living in the Napa Valley.

One of the last events of the summer was the 8th Annual V Foundation Wine Celebration. The V Foundation is devoted to cancer research and was founded by the family of the late great college basketball coach Jim Valvano. We are very proud to be one of only 6 wineries which were asked to host a dinner for this wonderful charity auction. The event  this year raised $3.7 million dollars which funds 23 different cancer research programs around the country, on top of $21 million the charity has raised since its inception in 1999.
