2005 Frazier Merlot |
A quick note on 2005 Frazier Merlot. Those of you familiar with our Merlot know that it is made in a rather robust style, many including Bill Frazier say this is a "Cab drinker's Merlot." As such, we feel that this Merlot can be approached much in the same way you do a bottle of Cabernet. We have tasted this wine on several occasions and although it shows well at a very youthful age it certainly is a great Merlot with years of aging potential. If enjoying this Merlot at a young age we recommend decanting for one to two hours. Looking for a cheese to pair with this wine? Some of our favorites include- aged Gruyere, Danish Bleu, and even Camembert. Enjoy!

Seasons of Change
Winter time - features dormant vines in the vineyard
"An abundance of high quality fruit." No that is not someone from the winery touting the great vintage of 1997 but that of 2005. This was a vintage which yielded A-typical results. There was a great deal of fruit which came in from harvest, a total of 181,000 tons in Napa County alone. But the quality of the fruit is the real story, and both of these characteristics in tandem is what brings to mind notions of the '97 vintage. However, that is where the similarities stop.
The 2005 growing season began with a relatively cool and rainy spring; these two factors made for a rather slow start to vine growth. We transitioned into a long summer filled with only moderate heat which worked well to encourage extra growth and increased the size of the berries. The guys in the vineyard loved the summer of '05; they were able to go about their handiwork with relative ease, as conditions were near ideal. It is important to note that the long wet spring we embraced early in the year made for sufficient moisture in the soil during the summer. This phenomena combined with the moderate temperatures we experienced in south east Napa enabled us to minimize irrigation during the summer. As we have a naturally long growing season here at the Frazier Estate we held back on irrigation until we absolutely needed the water just before harvest. All of the grapes came in looking great. Although the berries and clusters were slightly larger there was even ripeness across all varietals. We believe that if the '05 Merlot is any indication, the entire vintage has the makings of a classic. |
Updates
The vines in the vineyard may have been dormant for the last few months but we have been very busy. We have had a few cool things occur since the last newsletter was sent in early December. This past January we met two very nice people. Well it turns out that one of these people is an editor with Conde Nast Traveler magazine. Well our new friends were excited to inform us that they loved their Frazier experience so much that they have decided to include us in the Conde Nast Traveler magazine 'Iconic Itineraries' issue. The issue featuring Frazier hits news shops in mid March and features the best of Napa & Sonoma Wine Country, many spots which are far removed from the typical itinerary of wine country visitors... Another exciting event has not yet taken place but will later this year. I am referring to Kim Frazier's recent engagement to Adam Caterino, aka the direct sales/ wine club manager. The wedding will be held this year on November 8th in Napa...Chocolate anyone? Those of you familiar with our tastings know that we put out very tasty truffles. Well, now we are including truffles made from the youngest member of the Frazier clan, Kevin. A college student and budding entrepreneur, Kevin has had a keen interest in chocolate for a long time, and while only 20 years old he has been making chocolate art since his early teen years. Kevin has begun to produce truffles for us to pair specifically with Frazier Cabernet. Although we do not know the final blend of Kevin's chocolate, apparently it is a proprietary blend, the proof is in the result and we are very happy to have Kevin's chocolate services at our disposal... Speaking of having things at one's disposal, we will pouring wine for 4 long and hard days (tough work we know) at Pebble Beach for the inaugural Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival. This one of a kind event features 35 celebrity chefs along over 200 premium wineries and will showcase some of California's best wines paired with the chef's expertise to create a series of memorable meals...Last but not least, we are very happy to announce that Dr. John York, owner of the San Francisco 49ers is a fan of Frazier wines. Dr. York successfully bid on our 5 case auction lot of Cabernet Sauvignon from our 2006 vintage at Premier Napa Valley. Premier Napa Valley is an annual event which brings together several hundred members of the wine trade to bid on one of a kind lots of wine created for the event.
